Surface Fronts

Image

Cold Front

Blue line indicating the leading edge of a cold air mass. Triangles point in the direction the front is moving. Cold fronts are often associated with severe weather because they provide the Lift Mechanism that triggers thunderstorm development.

Warm Front

Red line indicating the leading edge of a warm air mass. Rounded half-circles point in the direction of movement. Like Cold Fronts, Warm Fronts also can provide Lift and trigger severe weather.

Dry Line

Dashed brown line indicates a sharp difference between moist and dry air. Dry lines are often a focus of severe thunderstorm development.
